The Importance of a Good Design

Posted by Annie Napier on 11/15/2017

. . . .For a horticulturalist, I have to admit that I am the first to just go with the flow and pick out a plant, or 3 or 5, that I've fallen for at any given outing. Then I make a place for it, or imagine a garden in my head and just know that it will develop over the next decade or so. Drives my husband mad.  Well, let me be the first to tell you, my yard does not have curb appeal and it does not look like a woman with a master's degree in horticulture lives there! Yes, my plants are healthy and the weeds are kept down, but there's just no flow. I garden anyway. For the birds and the bees and the flowers and the breeze...just the kiss of the sun and to be on my knees. And for tomatoes.

.....You know, the roofer's house needs a new roof and the painter's house needs a fresh coat, yada yada.

There is a beautiful, wonderful, splendidly happy medium between a formal garden and the hodge podge of mine just described above.  It is called design.

Jonathan and Kristy have such a wonderful eye for it.  I love watching and listening to them talk about the special issues that each project presents and hearing how they creatively not only solve the problem, but bring an aesthetic to the landscape that truly jives with each client's personal tastes and priorities.  We have a variety of clients from homeowners to business owners; Kristy and Jonathan, with 28 combined years of design experience,  have probably seen, I would imagine anyway, any type of issue that a landscape can present.  Jonathan has studied in Japan and Kristy has studied in Peru, I just think that's so cool.  OSU really gave them a great education to start with and their experience and natural talent and passion beyond magnifies what they bring to the table every day, for every client!

Here are just a few reasons why I know that a decision to start with a solid and exciting design from Wabi Sabi West will be worth your investment:

Most importantly, we know that you want low maintenance.  We just call that "the right plant in the right place".

Everyone has a different definition of “low maintenance,” but everyone seems to want it. You might think 2 hours per week is too much time to spend watering, weeding, and caring for plants. However, if we suggest keeping perennials to a minimum to cut down on maintenance you might realize you don’t want to sacrifice color and are willing to spend a little more time.

Abundance of IDEAS. -  Let us help develop and refine your ideas into an actionable plan.  Watch the magic as one word or idea or "Oh, I like that" from you spins Kristy and Jonathan into a new and improved idea using past experience and industry expertise.

Site Analysis-Every parcel of land is unique as well as being part of a larger ecosystem. Our designers have the skill to understand the big picture ecosystem as well as the microclimate that will dictate the design. Be a smart DIY'er.  Don't miss out on letting a pro use their experience to help you forsee future problems and save you money on costly mistakes.

Conceptual Design- Every site has multiple solutions, but when the background research has been done thoroughly, these 2 will be able to narrow down the options to a concept that answers your needs, wants and wishes, while addressing the existing issues.

Construction Planning-There's nothing like having your favorite idea for a design not work out because it's not buildable or sustainable. By working with our seasoned professionals, you can be assured that what you develop and choose to invest in together will have the ability to not only be built, once, the right way, but also sustained over the long run.

Budget Creation-As you bring your project into the reality of money, understanding what things cost is very important. We can help you develop, and stick with, a reasonable project budget range. We can also guide you through the pricing/bidding process, so that you can determine whether to build the project all at once or to phase it in over a few years.

Contractor Liaison- We can be your Design/Build firm or we can employ our strong relationships with reputable and quality contractors for your every need; everything from masonry, lighting, pools, grading, and carpentry to irrigation. These relationships are very useful to anyone planning a larger scaled project.

Project Management-Another benefit of working with us is having Kristy stick with you through the construction phase. Every project has the potential to be improved upon as it is being built. Additionally, almost every project will have some “unknown” pop up during the construction process. Having YOUR designer close at hand as your project manager will ensure that you capitalize on opportunity and minimize any pitfalls.

I'm a newish first time homeowner who was just happy to have her own yard to garden in.  I do regret that all that hard work is something that only I can love, though!  Soon, I'm sure, you'll see before and after pictures of my messy little hort haven kissed by the design of Wabi Sabi West.

If it sounds like I'm a bit gaga over Wabi Sabi West, it's because I am. Just take a look at our portfolios, I am working on adding more of our before and after pictures to the website.  Even if you're not ready to invest yet, give us a call, we'll be happy to talk to you about the process of working on your landscape!

We can't wait to put our skills to use for you.
